Aural Tests
One of the aural tests at every grade of ABRSM practical exams takes the form of "Listen to this piece
and then I'll ask you about...".
At higher grades, more information is required in your answers and you will asked to identify features
such as texture, structure, Tonality and Character. The following is a list of keywords and phrases
that you may find helpful. Try to identify which words and phrases apply to music that you are listening to.
And listen to as much music as you can, from all periods, Baroque to Jazz!

Keywords
For grades 5-7, you will be asked to identify which period a piece of music (played to you) is from: Baroque, Classical,
Romantic, or 20th century. This is followed by "Which features tell you this?". The following document identifies many such
features (but not necessarily all) and might help you as you listen to music and learn to identify them.
